  • Bengaluru experienced a rare weather anomaly this June

  • Residual soil, atmospheric moisture marked moderated temperatures

Bengaluru experienced a rare weather anomaly this June, marking the driest month in eight years while also registering the coolest temperatures for the period in seven years, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The contrast was notable considering the city had received substantial rainfall in May.

June's rainfall deficiency stood out, with precipitation levels significantly below the monthly average. Despite the lack of showers, the city recorded surprisingly mild temperatures. This cooler trend was largely attributed to nighttime clear skies, which allowed surface heat to dissipate quickly, resulting in cooler mornings and evenings. Additionally, residual soil and atmospheric moisture from May’s rains may have contributed to the moderated temperatures.

Urban elements such as high-rise buildings and declining green cover further influenced the city’s microclimate, affecting how heat was stored and released.

The unusual combination of low rainfall and cooler weather underscores shifting climatic patterns in Bengaluru. Rapid urbanisation, declining vegetation, and erratic weather systems are making the city’s climate more unpredictable. As monsoon progresses, authorities and citizens alike may need to adapt swiftly by enhancing rainwater harvesting infrastructure and expanding green zones to mitigate future anomalies and ensure climate resilience.
