Bengaluru records drop in accidents, traffic violations surge in 2024

The Bengaluru Traffic Police reported a decline in overall accidents in 2024, with a 1.26% reduction in fatal accidents and a 4.57% drop in non-fatal accidents compared to 2023. Total accidents fell by 3.97%, with 4,784 incidents reported, including 871 fatal cases and 3,913 non-fatal cases. These accidents resulted in 893 fatalities and 4,052 injuries.

Despite the improvement, self-accident cases increased by 3.34%, with 210 incidents leading to 212 fatalities. Pedestrian safety initiatives yielded significant results, with a 23.17% decrease in pedestrian deaths. The city recorded 233 pedestrian fatalities in 2024, down from 303 in 2023.

Traffic violations surged, with over 82.86 lakh cases registered and ₹80.90 crore in fines collected. Drunk driving cases saw a sharp rise, from 7,053 in 2023 to 23,574 in 2024.

The traffic police also facilitated medical emergencies by creating 54 green corridors during the year. Measures to combat wheeling resulted in 532 cases being registered, leading to 520 vehicle seizures and 456 arrests. Additionally, action was taken against 121 minors and 79 guardians, with 146 driving licenses suspended and 246 vehicle registrations canceled.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police credited their efforts, including black spot rectifications, for the improvements and vowed to continue prioritizing road safety and enforcement in 2025.
