The state meteorological department has issued an orange alert for several Karnataka districts, warning of heavy rainfall in the next 12 hours. Bengaluru, the state capital, witnessed a relentless rainstorm through Sunday night, recording 104 mm of rainfall by 5:30 am—marking the highest May rainfall in the last decade.

Rain lashed all eight directions of the city, affecting areas such as KR Circle, Corporation, Majestic, KR Market, Jayanagar, Vijayanagar, Hebbal, Chandra Layout, Rajajinagar, Bommanahalli, and Nayandahalli. HSR Layout’s First Sector was particularly hard hit, with water entering basements, homes, and apartment complexes. Residents spent the early hours battling the rising water and trying to drain it from their properties.
In Shanthinagar, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) office was flooded, with water entering the ground floor and damaging documents in over eight rooms. Several official files were reported destroyed, causing administrative disruption.
The Rajakaluve chamber also overflowed, leading to submerged vehicles including jeeps and cars. Water stagnation on major roads and in low-lying areas continues to disrupt normal life, especially at the start of the work week.
Meanwhile, districts including Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, and Tumkur are also on high alert for May 21 as the rain threat looms large across the state.
