In response to recent tax notices being served to even small-scale retailers, bakery and condiments shop owners across Karnataka have launched a protest against the state government. Upset over what they call “harassment in the name of tax enforcement,” many grocery and retail shopkeepers have decided to intensify their agitation.

A major protest is scheduled for July 25 at Freedom Park, Bengaluru, where thousands of retailers are expected to gather. Ahead of the rally, several traders have begun symbolic protests—some are wearing black bands while continuing their business, while others have shut their shops partially.

Beginning tomorrow, cigarettes, gutka, and certain other products will not be available at many stores as part of the protest. In some shops, notices have been put up saying milk, tea, and coffee will not be served for the next three days—only black tea, green tea, and lemon tea will be offered.

One grocery store's board reads, “We will shut our store completely on Friday to support the protest.” Meanwhile, uncertainty looms in several bakeries and condiment stores, where dairy products like curd, buttermilk, and tea may not be available.

Retailers are demanding that the government stop issuing tax notices arbitrarily and instead hold discussions with trade associations to address grievances fairly.
