In a strong push to prevent urban flooding during the upcoming monsoon, the Bengaluru administration is gearing up for a large-scale ‘Operation Demolition’ drive starting next week. The initiative targets over 1,500 identified encroachments on rajakaluves (stormwater drains) across the city, with more than 800 buildings already marked for demolition.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has issued direct instructions to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and related departments to clear all illegal structures on drains before the rains begin. This directive comes in the wake of repeated instances of heavy flooding caused by blocked stormwater paths in recent years, leading to major damage in residential and commercial zones.
The BBMP, in coordination with the Survey Department, has completed mapping and verification of encroachments. Based on their detailed reports, the buildings that fall within the designated stormwater drain buffer zones have been marked for clearance.
The JCBs and demolition squads are expected to swing into action next week, with the BBMP stating that no illegal encroacher will be spared. Public notices have already been issued to several properties warning them of imminent action.
Residents in affected areas have been advised to cooperate with authorities. Officials emphasize that this operation is critical to safeguard the city from annual flood chaos, protect civic infrastructure, and restore the natural drainage system of Bengaluru.
