Bengaluru is on track to become a major international hub for flower trade with the establishment of a cutting-edge flower market on a five-acre plot at Bagalkote’s University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS) GKVK campus in Bengaluru.

This project, spearheaded by Karnataka’s Horticulture Department in collaboration with the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), is set to boost the region’s floriculture industry with modern infrastructure and technology.

Officials from APMC and the Horticulture Department recently inspected the proposed site, which was subsequently approved by UHS for development under a lease agreement. UHS Vice-Chancellor Vishnuvardhan reportedly confirmed that the university’s board granted approval, solidifying plans for a high-tech flower market. Currently, funding options are being explored, with possibilities of a public-private partnership (PPP) or support from national financial bodies like NABARD.

The new market will host up to 200 stalls, offering ample space for growers, traders, and exporters. Its modern facilities are expected to streamline operations, enhance quality control, and offer a transparent trading platform.

The project responds to long-standing demands for improved infrastructure from Karnataka’s floriculture sector, which spans 35,000 hectares, with significant contributions from Bengaluru. Once operational, the flower market is expected to address existing trade challenges, support industry growth, and attract international buyers. Additionally, the market promises local job creation, fostering economic development in the region.
