  • Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda suspended after RCB stampede tragedy
  • Reports suggest his advice to defer celebrations was ignored
  • Disquiet grows among IPS officers over perceived scapegoating.

The Karnataka government has suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda following the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations. The incident, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured, has sparked public outrage and triggered a chain of administrative fallout.

Dayananda’s suspension comes amid reports that he had advised the Home Department against holding large-scale celebrations, citing exhaustion among city police personnel and lack of readiness following extended election and IPL duties. Despite this, the Home Minister, Dr. G Parameshwara, had reportedly insisted on going ahead with the event.

The move to suspend the city’s top police officer has generated unease within the state’s IPS fraternity, with murmurs of discontent suggesting that Dayananda has been made the fall guy in a situation driven by political decisions. While the government has framed the action as part of accountability measures, the broader context of administrative advice being overruled has not gone unnoticed.

Meanwhile, public mourning continues, and compensation measures have been announced for the families of the deceased. However, questions remain over event planning, crowd control, and political responsibility. With internal discontent and public scrutiny growing, the aftermath of the tragedy is far from over.
