  • Phase 2 of Bengaluru suburban rail adds 146 km, linking with circular network
  • Ongoing project includes four corridors covering 148 km
  • Feasibility study for 287 km circular rail network underway

The Bengaluru suburban rail project is set for a major expansion under its Phase 2 plan, with an additional 146 km of track to be integrated into the proposed circular rail network. The Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE), which is overseeing the project, has outlined several key extensions, including routes from Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur, Chikkabanavara to Kunigal, Kengeri to Hejjala, and more.

This new phase builds on the ongoing 148 km suburban rail project, which consists of four corridors: the Sampige Line, Mallige Line, Parijaata Line, and a stretch connecting Heelalige to Rajanukunte. Together, these lines are expected to improve connectivity within Bengaluru and to nearby areas.

In addition, the Union Ministry of Railways is working on a 287 km circular rail network around Bengaluru, linking several key locations such as Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, and Hejjala. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this circular rail is currently under preparation.

K-RIDE has also sought approval for a feasibility study to explore the integration of the suburban rail expansion with the circular network. However, previous proposals for a larger 452 km expansion were rejected by South Western Railway last year. The successful completion of the feasibility study and DPR could pave the way for further development once approvals from both Union and state governments are received.
