  • K-RIDE installs India’s longest 31-meter U-girder for the Bengaluru railway project
  • U-girders offer faster, lighter construction with fewer foundations
  • 450 U-girders planned for the Mallige Line, completion by December 2026

K-RIDE, a joint initiative between the Railways Ministry and the Karnataka government, has achieved a significant milestone in the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP). The project saw the successful installation of India’s longest precast U-girder, measuring 31 meters, for the Mallige Line, marking a major step forward in the city’s rail infrastructure development.

The U-girder, which was cast in January 2024 at Gollahalli, was launched overnight between 9:45 pm and 10:00 pm at Yeshwantpur. This installation is part of the ongoing work on the Baiyappanahalli-Chikkabanavara line.

U-girders offer several advantages over traditional box girders. Their pre-tensioned, U-shaped design not only ensures better quality but also accelerates the construction process. The longer U-girder reduces the need for additional foundations and piers, streamlining the overall structure. Unlike segmental box girders, which require several days to assemble, U-girders can be installed in just one night. Their lighter weight makes them easier to handle and install, further speeding up construction.

K-RIDE plans to use 450 U-girders for the elevated stretch of the Mallige Line, which will span eight kilometers between Hebbal and Yeshwantpur. With 60 U-girders already cast, the project is on track for completion by December 2026. The use of 31-meter U-girders reflects the innovative engineering solutions driving the BSRP forward.
