In the works is a 287-kilometer rail network encircling Bengaluru
Ministry of Railways has granted permission for Final Location Survey (FLS)
Project enhances Bengaluru's rail capacity and alleviates congestion
In the works is a 287-kilometer rail network encircling Bengaluru, as per the plans of the South Western Railway (SWR). This ambitious project aims to fortify local train services, alleviate strain on current rail networks, and complement the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) and Namma Metro.
According to reports, Sanjeev Kishore, the general manager of SWR, has indicated that the Ministry of Railways has granted permission for the Final Location Survey (FLS) of the proposed double-line circular rail network, as put forth by SWR.
The envisioned network linking various points around Bengaluru, namely Nidvanda, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, Heelalige, Solur, and Nidvanda, is intended to enhance Bengaluru’s rail capacity and alleviate congestion in the current railway system, while considering future demands, as stated by Kishore.
The operation of Memu or Demu trains on this network could potentially ease the burden on the existing rail networks that manage long-distance trains.
Additionally, the KRIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited) is actively executing 148 suburban rail networks, while the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to launch the Namma Metro spanning 175 kilometres by 2025, with intentions to extend it to 314 kilometres by 2040.
