Bengaluru is set for a significant infrastructure revamp following the approval of a USD 426 million loan from the World Bank. The Karnataka Water Security and Resilience Programme aims to improve water security and boost climate resilience for more than four million residents in the city. The initiative targets long-standing issues such as water shortages, flooding, and outdated infrastructure in India’s technology hub.

A central component of the programme is the restoration of 183 lakes across Bengaluru. These lakes play a critical role in absorbing excess rainwater during heavy downpours, reducing the risk of urban flooding. The project also includes enhancements to early warning systems and disaster preparedness through the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, aiming to bolster the city’s response to extreme weather events.
The funding will support the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in modernising water supply systems. Planned measures include replacing old pipelines, introducing smart water meters, and improving service efficiency. In addition, the project aims to attract USD 5 million in private sector investment to drive innovation in water management.
The comprehensive programme is expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s water infrastructure, reduce environmental risks, and enhance the city’s resilience to climate-related challenges. The initiative marks a critical step in securing sustainable urban growth for one of India’s fastest-growing metropolises.
