Bengaluru is set to mark World Environment Day on June 6 with a range of climate-focused activities, led by the Climate Action Cell under the Greater Bengaluru Act (GBA). In a press note released by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), officials announced that this year’s theme — “combating plastic pollution” — will anchor city-wide events aimed at raising awareness about environmental degradation and climate resilience.

The observance will bring together government bodies, educators, students, and civic groups to spotlight Bengaluru’s growing leadership in local climate action. One of the highlights of the event will be the announcement of winners of the Blu-Green Awards. Out of 175 entries received from across sectors like waste management, air quality, water conservation, biodiversity, disaster readiness, energy, and urban planning, 15 finalists will be honored on June 5.

In addition, the official website for youth-led Climate Action Clubs — aimed at involving young people in environmental advocacy — will be launched on June 6. These clubs are expected to serve as community-based platforms for climate education and action.

Bengaluru stands out as one of the few Indian cities with a dedicated Climate Action Plan and a full-fledged Climate Action Cell headed by a Special Commissioner. The GBA has earmarked ₹28 crore under the Bengaluru Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP) for the fiscal year 2025–26.
