In an effort to reduce the rising number of road accidents, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have implemented new measures on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road.

The speed limit on this stretch has been set at 80 km per hour, and violators will be fined. To ensure compliance, speed trap cameras have been installed to automatically detect and penalize over-speeding vehicles.

Bengaluru, with a population of 1.4 crore and a traffic density of 827 vehicles per 1,000 people, faces significant traffic challenges. This vehicle-to-population ratio of 1:1 is the highest in India and continues to grow. In the first two months of 2024 alone, the city recorded 174 traffic fatalities. In 2023, the total number of fatalities reached 914.

Particularly concerning is the elevated corridor near Devanahalli, where high speeds have contributed to about 10 percent of the total fatalities. Another hotspot is Kengeri, primarily due to the NICE Road. Among the fatalities in 2023, 74 percent were two-wheeler riders, and 21 percent were pedestrians. Alarmingly, nearly 60 percent of those affected were aged 60 or above.

These new speed enforcement measures are part of a broader initiative by the Bengaluru Traffic Police to enhance road safety and curb the high rate of accidents in the city.
