Bengaluru Traffic Police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving following a spike in road rage incidents and negligent driving under the influence. Over the past four months, authorities registered 11,940 cases of drunk driving, highlighting a significant enforcement effort.

Traffic data reveals a month-wise breakdown: 4,284 cases in September, 1,941 in October, 3,156 in November, and 2,559 so far in December (up to December 25). During this period, over 7.3 lakh vehicles were inspected, underscoring the extensive scale of the operation.

The special drive, conducted every week from Thursday to Sunday, aims to curb such offenses. In the past week alone, over 60,000 vehicles were checked, leading to the cancellation of 769 licenses. Additionally, more than 200 drivers faced penalties for reckless driving, collectively amounting to Rs 2.41 lakh in fines.

To enhance transparency and accountability, traffic violations are now mandated to be recorded at CCTV-equipped junctions. Furthermore, women personnel are being deployed during the registration of these cases, ensuring sensitivity and safety.

In light of rising complaints about sexual assaults on women during nighttime, the traffic police had earlier directed that two women constables be assigned to night duty at all city traffic police stations. This measure aims to bolster safety for women and address concerns effectively.

The intensified enforcement underscores the traffic department’s commitment to improving road safety and addressing issues stemming from drunk driving and reckless behavior on Bengaluru roads.
