Bengaluru’s ambitious tunnel construction project may no longer be on the cards, as Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot hinted at a shift in the government's plans during his address to the Assembly. Instead, the focus now appears to be on a double-decker flyover, accommodating both metro and road traffic.

The Governor’s speech also mentioned the long-pending Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project, with 2,565 acres of land already acquired for its development. This move is expected to help decongest the city's ever-growing traffic burden.
A key financial concern raised in his address was the pending Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB) grant. While ₹5,000 crore had been promised, only ₹3,222 crore has been released so far, leaving ₹1,778 crore yet to be disbursed.
Though there has been no official announcement on scrapping the tunnel project, the Governor’s speech made no mention of it, instead emphasizing elevated corridors and ring roads. This has fueled speculation that the government is reconsidering underground infrastructure in favor of flyovers and metro expansion.
With Bengaluru’s traffic woes continuing to mount, whether these alternative projects will offer the relief commuters desperately need remains to be seen. The absence of clarity on tunnel construction has only added to the uncertainty surrounding the city's infrastructure roadmap.
