Rising cab fares have triggered a notable shift among a large number of travelers towards opting for the BMTC’s Vayu Vajra bus service for commuting to the Kempegowda International Airport, situated approximately 35 km away from the city center.

Recognizable by their characteristic blue color, these air-conditioned buses, manufactured by Volvo, have gained immense popularity among airport-goers, marking a remarkable resurgence following the pandemic.

According to officials, they now transport around 13,000 passengers daily, generating an impressive revenue of Rs 32 lakh. Notably, during the recent cab drivers’ strike on September 11, Vayu Vajra buses raked in as much as Rs 60 lakh, counting esteemed passengers such as the renowned cricket legend, Anil Kumble.

A senior BMTC official emphasized that the response from passengers has been exceedingly positive. The Vayu Vajra buses have finally broken even, underscoring the robust demand has prompted BMTC to introduce two additional routes.

Factors contributing to the success of the Volvo services to the airport (Vayu Vajra) were primarily the surge in passenger traffic to the airport and the escalating cab fares. Moreover, the inauguration of the lavish Terminal 2 has further propelled the ridership of Vayu Vajra buses.

The considerable increase in fares charged by ride-hailing platforms like OLA and Uber, coupled with the discontinuation of ride-sharing, also played a significant role in this shift.

The BMTC is currently prioritizing the enhancement of the overall passenger experience by imparting soft skills training to the Vayu Vajra crew and placing special emphasis on ensuring the safety of women travelers.
