Sophia High School offers Kannada as the second language for high school students starting 8th grade. Some parents were, however, not comfortable with this arrangement.

Screenshots of a WhatsApp group chat have been circulating on social media. In this, parents are being moblised for putting pressure on the education department to concede to their demand of their kids not having to learn Kannada. Around 30 parents had already issued support for the cause and the organisers of this dissent were trying to touch the figure of 50. There were plans in place for a meeting with the school officials.

However the school has denied scheduling any meeting. Arnavaz K Kapadia, who is a teacher in Sophia High School said, “We always abide by government rules. Our textbooks are also government recommended. There are no plans to discard Kannada," as repoted by The Hindu.

The school has denied any complaints from the parents’ end.

However this was fiercely contested on social media. Some urged for the school’s licence to be cancelled. Mohan Dasari, Aam Aadmi Party member said, “We do not need schools that do not teach Kannada in Karnataka”.
