A unique case has been brought before the Karnataka High Court, where a wife has filed a petition alleging that her husband loves his pet cat more than her. The woman claims that the cat has caused frequent injuries by scratching her, and has also been the source of constant arguments between the couple. She has further accused her husband of assault, allegedly triggered by the cat’s presence, leading to a case being filed under IPC Section 498A (cruelty to wife).

The case is currently being heard by Justice Nagaprasanna, who noted a peculiar detail in the petition: the wife’s complaint states that only the cat injured her, not the husband. Additionally, there was no mention of dowry harassment, which is usually central to Section 498A cases. Given these unusual circumstances, the court observed that the allegations appeared to be unsubstantiated.
As a result, the court has stayed the proceedings against the husband, pending further examination of the case. The unusual nature of the case has drawn attention, with many questioning whether personal disputes over pets should be treated in the same legal context as more serious cases of domestic violence or harassment.
