Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is setting up a Security Operations Centre (SOC) to protect its systems from potential cyber threats, becoming the first metro operator in India to do so. The SOC, planned to be established at Byappanahalli, will play a crucial role in safeguarding BMRCL’s extensive IT infrastructure, which includes around 13,200 CCTV cameras across 66 stations and 1,368 cameras inside metro trains, as well as approximately 1,200 computers used for daily operations.

With cyber threats on the rise worldwide, BMRCL aims to stay proactive against potential risks. The SOC will closely monitor the entire network and IT systems, constantly collecting data logs to detect early signs of threats. In the event of an attack, it will facilitate swift responses and conduct analyses to prevent future incidents. Additionally, a cybersecurity guidebook will direct traffic management protocols, while threat identification tools from government agencies will help to identify and block suspicious IP addresses.
This SOC will also monitor the stability and performance of BMRCL’s CCTV network and Network Operations Centre (NOC), essential for efficient operations and reliable security coverage. In future phases, BMRCL plans to expand the SOC’s capabilities to include operational technology, such as tracking passenger numbers through QR ticketing. Globally, incidents in countries like Poland and Germany have underscored the need for enhanced cybersecurity in rail networks, making BMRCL’s move timely and strategic.
