Bengaluru: Women gather outside post offices in light of announcement of Mahalakshmi Yojana

In the lead up to the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Indian National Congress (INC) leader Rahul Gandhi had announced that were the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to come to power, women falling below a threshold of income would be guaranteed of Rs 8500 per month. This is one among the many guarantees of the government titled ‘Mahalakshmi Yojana.’ The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier issued a guideline preventing people from registering citizens for schemes meant to be implemented after the election. The slogan “Takatak takatak’ also became popular due to this scheme. 

In light of this announcement, huge crowds of women have been gathering outside post offices in Bengaluru to open an Indian Post Payment Banks (IPPB) account. This has been ongoing for over 15 days. 1000s of women have been opening accounts. The queueing starts as early as 4 AM. They are being provided tokens in order for the process to occur more smoothly.

The 7th phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha Election will be held on June 1st. The result of the election will be announced on June 4th. Whether INC will be able to make inroads after 10 years remains to be seen.
