11 major roads in South Bengaluru to be white‑topped with footpath upgrades at ₹94.62 crore; work to finish in 11 months, part of ₹1,700 crore city plan

Residents of South Bengaluru should prepare for traffic diversions and road closures as 11 major roads are set to undergo white-topping works. The project, covering stretches in BTM Layout, Jayanagar, and Padmanabhanagar assembly constituencies, will also include comprehensive footpath development. The total estimated cost of the initiative is ₹94.62 crore.

The work is expected to be completed within 11 months once contracts are finalized. Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-Smile), a special purpose vehicle under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, has invited tenders for the project. The tendering process began with bids opened on December 24, followed by technical evaluations on January 3. Those qualifying in the technical stage will move forward to the financial bidding round.

While the specific roads selected for white-topping have not yet been announced, officials note that one of the biggest challenges lies in securing traffic department approvals. Before work can begin, traffic authorities must assess road usage and plan diversions to nearby routes. In addition, utility lines belonging to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Bescom, and other agencies will need to be shifted to facilitate construction.

White-topping, which involves laying concrete over asphalt, is considered a durable solution to potholes and frequent road damage. The method provides longer-lasting surfaces compared to traditional asphalt, reducing maintenance costs and improving commuter experience.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who also serves as Bengaluru Development Minister, has outlined a larger vision for the city’s road infrastructure. Over the next three years, more than 500 km of roads across Bengaluru are planned to be white-topped at an estimated cost of ₹1,700 crore. The South Bengaluru project forms part of this broader initiative aimed at delivering smoother, pothole-free roads and enhancing urban mobility.
