Centre approves massive funding under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, with major focus on waste processing, landfills, legacy waste cleanup, and road sweeping in Bengaluru.
The Union government has approved a major financial allocation of ₹2,245.30 crore to Karnataka under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U2.0), providing a significant push to urban sanitation and waste management reforms. Of this, ₹83.53 crore will be released once the Karnataka government submits a duly approved Action Plan.
For Bengaluru, projects worth ₹512.68 crore have already received clearance. These projects focus on strengthening the city’s waste processing systems, improving landfill infrastructure, deploying mechanical road sweepers, and remediating massive volumes of legacy waste.
The information was shared by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in response to a Rule 377 intervention raised in the Lok Sabha on February 5 by PC Mohan, who sought the establishment of modern waste management clusters in Bengaluru.

Out of the total allocation, ₹709.30 crore has been earmarked specifically for solid waste management. So far, ₹625.77 crore worth of proposals have been approved, and the Karnataka government has already claimed ₹87.82 crore. The remaining ₹83.53 crore will be released after the state submits its Action Plan, duly approved by the State Level Technical Committee (SLTC). Once the Centre gives final approval, the funds must be transferred to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) for on-ground implementation.
Bengaluru’s approved projects include the establishment of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) with a combined capacity of 1,226.11 tonnes per day (TPD), waste-to-energy plants with a capacity of 460 TPD, an 800-TPD sanitary landfill, and transfer stations capable of handling 6,081.74 TPD of waste. Additionally, the projects cover the remediation of 100.49 lakh tonnes of legacy waste and the procurement of 24 mechanical road sweepers. The Central share in these projects amounts to ₹128.16 crore.

Officials clarified that sanitation falls under the state government’s jurisdiction, meaning planning and execution responsibilities rest with the state and ULBs, while the Centre provides financial and policy support. MP PC Mohan emphasized that the timely submission of the Action Plan is critical to accelerate waste management reforms and ensure quicker implementation of projects in Bengaluru.
The funding is expected to significantly strengthen Bengaluru’s sanitation infrastructure, reduce landfill pressure, improve street cleanliness, and enhance overall urban living standards.
