Following directions from GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, the East City Corporation announces fast-track development of pedestrian pathways along metro corridors to improve safety and walkability.

In a major step towards improving pedestrian safety and walkability, the East City Corporation has announced plans to develop 50 kilometres of new pedestrian pathways in the Mahadevapura zone within the next two months. The decision follows clear instructions from Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, who emphasized the urgent need for safe and obstruction-free footpaths.

The announcement was made on Sunday after Mr. Rao flagged off a 10-kilometre pedestrian walk from Phoenix Mall to Hope Farm in Whitefield, highlighting the importance of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in the city’s fast-growing eastern corridor.

Addressing officials after the event, Mr. Rao said that footpath development along metro corridors would greatly benefit daily commuters and local residents. He instructed the East City Corporation and local officials to take immediate steps to remove encroachments, clear obstacles, resolve road-widening issues, and ensure uninterrupted pedestrian movement.

The GBA Chief Commissioner also stressed the importance of ensuring pedestrian safety at all stages of development. He assured officials that adequate financial support would be provided to complete the work within the targeted timeline. To accelerate execution, he encouraged partnerships with corporate organisations, stating that public-private collaboration could help deliver high-quality infrastructure faster.

Officials said that the proposed 50-km pedestrian pathway network will focus on busy commuter routes, metro-access corridors, and high-footfall stretches, especially in Mahadevapura, one of Bengaluru’s fastest-developing zones.
