After being denied H-1B visas three years in a row, Bengaluru AI professional Tanush Sharanarthi secures the O-1 visa, highlighting talent, perseverance, and contributions to artificial intelligence.
Bengaluru technology professional Tanush Sharanarthi has achieved a major career milestone, securing the O-1 visa, a nonimmigrant visa for individuals with “extraordinary ability.” The 26-year-old’s success comes after being denied entry into the H-1B visa lottery for three consecutive years.

Sharanarthi, an IBM employee in California, shared his journey on LinkedIn, humorously dubbing the O-1 visa the ‘Einstein’ visa.” He described how setbacks in the H-1B lottery did not deter him; instead, he focused on his professional growth and contribution to the artificial intelligence (AI) community.
The O-1 visa requires applicants to meet at least three of eight criteria, including research, publications, judging competitions, and professional recognition. Over six years, Sharanarthi’s passion-driven work, including publishing AI research, reviewing scholarly papers, and judging hackathons, naturally fulfilled the requirements. He says, “Consistency pays better than the lottery.”
His story has gone viral on social media, with many praising his determination. Sharanarthi has also expressed willingness to mentor others aiming to develop profiles that meet O-1 visa standards, inspiring a new generation of tech professionals to persist despite setbacks.

The O-1 visa is reserved for individuals who demonstrate extraordinary ability or achievement in arts, sciences, education, business, athletics, or motion pictures/television, emphasizing that talent and consistent contribution can open global opportunities even in the face of repeated challenges.
