Appointment signals major expansion push as AI firm strengthens presence in India
Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has appointed senior technology leader Irina Ghose as the Managing Director for its India operations, marking a significant milestone ahead of the company’s first office opening in Bengaluru.
The appointment comes as Anthropic prepares to scale up its presence in India, following strong user response to its Claude chatbot and other AI-powered coding and productivity tools. The Bengaluru office is expected to serve as a key hub for the company’s engagement with India’s fast-growing AI ecosystem.
Announcing the appointment, Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic, said Ghose’s leadership would play a vital role as the company deepens its engagement across India. He noted that as Anthropic expands its teams and partnerships in the country, her experience will help ensure the company’s approach remains rooted in local understanding while staying aligned with its broader mission.
Irina Ghose, in a LinkedIn post, said her role would focus on working closely with organisations, developers and startups across India. She added that the aim would be to help them use AI tools to transform operations and create tangible business value.
Highlighting India’s importance to the company, Ghose pointed out that the country is Anthropic’s second-largest user base for Claude. According to Anthropic’s latest Economic Index, nearly half of all Claude.ai usage in India relates to computer and mathematical tasks, reflecting the country’s strong technical orientation and growing demand for AI-driven solutions.

Anthropic also announced that CEO Dario Amodei, along with several senior executives, will travel to India in February. The leadership team is expected to officially inaugurate the Bengaluru office and take part in the India AI Impact Summit.
Ghose also indicated that having a dedicated India presence would enable more localised adoption of AI solutions tailored to the country’s needs.
Before joining Anthropic, Irina Ghose served as Managing Director of Microsoft India for over two and a half years. Her career at Microsoft spanned more than two decades, during which she held several leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer for India operations and Executive Director for the company’s cloud business.
Prior to joining Microsoft in 2001, she had brief stints at Indian technology firms HCL and Wipro.
With Ghose’s appointment, Anthropic is positioning Bengaluru as a central base for its India strategy as it looks to deepen its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.
