International conference on ‘Food Practices in the Global South’ opens Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Department of English at Bangalore University.
Bangalore University’s Department of English hosted an international academic conference titled ‘Food Practices in the Global South’ at its Jnana Bharathi Campus, bringing together scholars, researchers, and academicians from across India and abroad.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jayakar S.M. underlined the growing relevance of humanities, social sciences, arts, and literature in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital technologies. He emphasised that the study of literature and culture enriches human understanding and strengthens social awareness.
Highlighting the theme of the conference, he said food, though part of everyday life, offers deep insights into society, culture, identity, and lived experiences. He noted that examining food practices allows scholars to understand social diversity, inequalities, and historical contexts. He also pointed out that English Studies has expanded far beyond traditional literary boundaries and now engages with interdisciplinary and cultural perspectives.

The conference was organised by the Department of English in collaboration with the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies in India (IACLALS). Dr. Jayakar stressed that academic discussions and conferences of this nature are essential to understand the complex realities of contemporary society.
Conference Convenor and Head of the Department of English, Prof. Shobha M., welcomed the dignitaries, delegates, and members of IACLALS. She announced that the inauguration of this international conference also marked the beginning of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Department of English, which completes 50 years in 2025.
She highlighted the department’s significant contribution to literary, cultural, and interdisciplinary research over the past five decades.
Prof. Shobha added that the conference offers a valuable platform for meaningful academic exchange and encourages critical engagement with emerging themes in English Studies.
The programme was attended by Registrar K.T. Shanthala, Conference Convener Prof. Sindhu J., IACLALS President Asaduddin, along with senior faculty members, researchers, and students, making it a significant academic gathering for the university.
