Heavy machinery activity triggers suspicion, officials say ₹179-crore lake rejuvenation is underway
Bellandur Lake, one of the largest lakes in Bengaluru, has recently become the centre of public attention due to round-the-clock movement of heavy machinery, including JCBs, Hitachi excavators and trucks. The continuous noise and activity have sparked widespread concern among local residents, leading to speculation and confusion.
People living around the lake say that machinery is operating not just during the day, but even at night, creating unease. Many residents claimed they were not informed about the nature of the work, which led to doubts about whether illegal encroachment or real estate-related activity was taking place within the lake area.
Some locals even alleged that loud sounds resembling explosions were being heard at night, raising fears of blasting activities. Social media posts questioning the work at the lake further fuelled public suspicion, adding to the growing confusion.
However, officials have firmly denied all allegations of encroachment or blasting. According to them, no illegal activity is taking place, and the rumours are completely false.

Authorities clarified that the work currently underway is part of a Bellandur Lake rejuvenation project, being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹179 crore. The project is being implemented as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
As part of the restoration, desilting work is being carried out to remove accumulated sludge from the lake. In addition, a 1-kilometre-long and 24-metre-wide road is being developed along the Bellandur Lake bund road. This road will connect the Ejipura Outer Ring Road to the Sarjapur Outer Ring Road, improving traffic movement in the area.
Officials said that the work is being done continuously to ensure the lake is cleaned and the road is completed before the monsoon, which explains the heavy machinery movement even during night hours.
While authorities maintain that the project is aimed purely at lake rejuvenation and infrastructure improvement, residents say they will continue to closely monitor the situation. Many have stressed that development is welcome, but any form of encroachment or misuse of lake land must be strictly dealt with.
