Bengaluru Airport’s T2 enforces an 8-minute pick-up limit, FASTag monitoring, and lane segregation to cut congestion and curb unauthorised taxis

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has introduced a stricter traffic management system at Terminal 2 (T2) to tackle recurring congestion and unauthorized taxi operations in the pick-up zone. The new policy, rolled out by Bengaluru International Airport Ltd. (BIAL), aims to streamline the vehicle flow, minimize delays, and enhance passenger safety.

Under the revised arrangement, vehicles entering and exiting the T2 arrivals area are now regulated through FASTag-enabled gates. Private cars are permitted an eight-minute window to pick up passengers and exit the terminal. Although this limit may seem tight, airport officials emphasized that it is more lenient than the five-minute cap followed at several international airports. The restriction is designed to discourage vehicles from idling and prevent unused lanes from being occupied unnecessarily.

The arrivals section at T2 has also undergone structural reorganization. The first set of lanes is now allocated exclusively to authorized taxi operators such as Ola, Uber, and government-run services. Adjacent lanes are designated for private white-board vehicles. This segregation aims to stop touts and unregistered commercial drivers from entering passenger areas—an issue that has repeatedly caused blockages and confusion.

A BIAL spokesperson reported that the updated system has been running efficiently so far, with the presence of police officers ensuring strict compliance. There have been no significant protests or disruptions from drivers since the new rules took effect.

Starting Saturday, the same framework will be implemented at Terminal 1 (T1). As T1’s arrival stretch is shorter, the timing sensors for private vehicles will activate around 80 metres before the designated pick-up bays. Barricades and traffic police have been deployed near the junction leading to both terminals to guide yellow-board taxis toward parking zones P3 and P4.

While some private cab drivers have expressed concerns that the eight-minute window may not be adequate during peak traffic hours, airport management maintains that the system is crucial to maintaining order and improving efficiency. The initiative represents KIA’s effort to create a smoother, safer, and more organized experience for both passengers and drivers.
