The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has joined hands with the Royal Mysore Sailing Club (RMSC) to launch a structured sailing programme for beginners at Yelahanka Lake. The initiative aims to introduce citizens to small boat sailing through guided training and certified instruction.
Sailing programme for newcomers
The programme, designed for newcomers with no prior experience, will run in multiple batches. Priced at ₹14,500 plus taxes, it offers participants theoretical lessons and hands-on practice, culminating in a Basic Skills Certificate. The training includes instruction in boat rigging, rope handling, manoeuvres, and essential rescue techniques. Successful candidates can advance to higher levels of sailing once the introductory module is complete. Registration will be conducted exclusively online, with no walk-in admissions permitted.

Although fee-based, the organisers noted that sailing programmes are not always charged at a fixed rate and in some cases may be offered free of cost. The initiative is expected to widen access to the sport, which in India is primarily associated with the armed forces and a limited number of civilian clubs. Karnataka already has an active sailing ecosystem, with the Karnataka State Sailing Association conducting annual competitions at the KRS Dam backwaters.
This is not BBMP’s first foray into promoting water-based sports. It has also collaborated with the Kayaking and Canoeing Association of Karnataka to host training at Yele Mallappa Chetty Lake. A rowing facility once operated at Madiwala Lake was discontinued after the BBMP took charge of the waterbody.
