BMTC and GBA are planning a pilot bus lane on Outer Ring Road, learning from past failures caused by metro construction, in a bid to control Bengaluru’s traffic jams.
Bengaluru may soon see a renewed attempt at dedicated bus lanes on the Outer Ring Road as authorities look for ways to manage the city’s worsening traffic congestion. BMTC and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) are planning a pilot project to ensure smoother traffic flow and encourage public transport use.

Earlier, BMTC had tried implementing bus lanes on the Outer Ring Road, but the initiative was unsuccessful due to disruptions caused by metro construction. Learning from that experience, the current plan has been developed in consultation with the traffic police.
Officials have clarified that bus lanes will resume operations immediately after the completion of the metro’s blue line segment. The responsibility for Outer Ring Road has shifted, with BMRCL handling metro-related roadwork, while GBA and the corporation oversee other civic development projects. Certain projects, like the footpath development work, remain under municipal or GBA jurisdiction.

Authorities believe that bus lanes can significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve commuting efficiency, and encourage more citizens to use public transport. This move represents a coordinated effort between BMTC, GBA, and the police to optimize Bengaluru’s urban mobility infrastructure.
