Additional trainsets, major corridor expansions and large-scale procurement will enable Bengaluru’s Purple, Green, Yellow and Pink Lines to run at faster intervals and reduce crowding.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing for a major capacity boost across the Namma Metro network, with plans to operate trains at a four-minute frequency on every corridor over the next two years. The upgrade aims to improve travel convenience, cut waiting time and ease crowding, especially at key interchange stations.
To support the higher frequency, the state-owned BEML has received a fresh contract to supply additional trainsets for all operational and upcoming metro lines. Officials noted that increased rolling stock will directly help in raising ridership and reducing congestion at major stations.

On the Yellow Line, 10-12 new trainsets are set to be deployed once the corridor extends to Attibele. With the introduction of the sixth trainset, services on this route are expected to run at 12-minute intervals, with more trains planned in the coming months to gradually bring the frequency down toward the network-wide target.
The Pink Line will also see significant improvements, supported by a previous variation order issued to BEML for seven additional trains. These units are part of BMRCL’s strategy to ensure that the Pink Line is equipped to achieve the same four-minute headway as the other corridors.
The agency has aligned its procurement timeline so that the Purple, Green, Yellow and Pink Lines can all uniformly operate at a four-minute frequency, reducing crowding at major interchange points including RV Road and Jayadeva.

BMRCL’s long-term expansion plans remain ambitious. The corporation recently highlighted that Bengaluru’s metro network, currently spanning 96 km, will grow to 175 km by the end of 2027. Further expansion is expected to take the network to 225 km by 2030, marking one of the fastest metro growth phases in the country.
