Bengaluru orchard opens doors for pomegranate farm tourism

Bengalureans can now pluck their own pomegranates straight from the orchard, thanks to a new farm tourism initiative launched at NCR Farm in Nagadasanahalli, near Yelahanka. Introduced on Saturday, the venture invites citizens to stroll through lush plantations, harvest fruits, and purchase them directly from cultivators, bypassing middlemen.

The pomegranate orchard is open daily from 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., and its debut drew a large turnout. Visitors were offered ripe pomegranates at ₹200 per kilogram—nearly half the market price—while enjoying the rural ambience. The experience served as both a family outing and an educational tour, giving children a glimpse into farming practices and the origins of their food.

27 acres of orchards

The initiative has been designed by farm owner Chandra NR, who manages 27 acres of orchards with residue-free methods. Each tree is expected to yield around 30 kilograms of fruit this season, with produce weighing between 200 and 600 grams and meeting export standards. Chandra has collaborated with city-based Pomex International, founded by agriculture graduates, to create a tourism-driven model that benefits both growers and consumers.

Organisers believe the project can be scaled across Karnataka, offering farmers protection from volatile market prices while giving urban residents access to fresh, affordable produce. Visitors also learned about the nutritional value of pomegranates, celebrated for their role in improving heart health, digestion, and skin vitality.

The festive launch transformed farming into a leisure activity, reinforcing direct bonds between cultivators and consumers.
