Karnataka okays a ₹307-crore upgrade of the 17-km ORR from KR Puram to Silk Board, adding 10 lanes, cycle paths, new bus shelters, and a PPP-led skywalk

The Karnataka Cabinet has given the green light to a ₹307-crore overhaul of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch between KR Puram metro station and the Silk Board junction. The 17.01-km corridor—one of Bengaluru’s busiest tech-hub routes—will undergo a comprehensive upgrade aimed at easing congestion and improving commuter experience.

According to Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), the redesigned corridor will feature a 10-lane layout, with three main carriageway lanes and two service-lane tracks on either side. Officials noted that the long-discontinued bus priority lane will be revived to facilitate faster movement of public transport and reduce traffic load on the main carriageway.

Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure form a key part of the project. Continuous brushed-concrete footpaths will be developed along the entire stretch and will double as dedicated cycle lanes. While certain road segments will be rebuilt from the base, most of the ORR will receive a new bituminous concrete surface to ensure smoother travel.

The proposal also includes upgraded public transport amenities, such as modernised bus shelters equipped with digital information panels. Additionally, the government is exploring a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for a planned skywalk that would run beneath the metro viaduct from Iblur to KR Puram, offering safer pedestrian connectivity.

Although early estimates placed the project cost at around ₹400 crore, the Cabinet approved a reduced budget of ₹307 crore. Work is expected to roll out soon, marking a significant step toward decongesting one of the city’s most critical traffic corridors.
