City logs nearly 4,000 accidents this year as government outlines enforcement action, safety upgrades and new infrastructure proposals to reduce pedestrian fatalities.
Bengaluru has witnessed 715 road fatalities in the last ten months, of which 203 were pedestrians, according to figures presented during the winter session of the Assembly at Suvarna Soudha, Belagavi. The data shows the city continues to face a severe road safety challenge despite a marginal dip in total accidents.
Between January and October 2025, the city recorded 3,985 accidents, lower than the 4,769 accidents reported in 2024. Last year, Bengaluru saw 894 deaths, including 246 pedestrian fatalities, underscoring the persistent vulnerability of walkers on city roads.
The government detailed a series of enforcement actions taken this year. As many as 83,139 cases were registered under the IMV Act, while 175 cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were booked for parking vehicles on footpaths. Additionally, 14,719 IMV Act cases and 39 BNS cases were filed against motorists riding on footpaths.
To curb pedestrian-related accidents, authorities have strengthened road infrastructure across several corridors. Officials have marked 216 lane locations, 363 zebra crossings, and identified 112 points for iron grill barricades along medians. The city currently operates 39 pelican signals, with awareness drives underway to help pedestrians use them safely.

A proposal has also been sent to the Greater Bengaluru Authority to install the identified infrastructure, along with a separate request for the construction of 101 skywalks at high-risk locations.
