A small step with a big impact, BWSSB’s mandatory tap aerator policy is helping Bengaluru save nearly 10 crore litres of water every day, turning the city’s taps into tools of conservation.
A simple innovation is creating a massive environmental impact across the city. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB)’s mandatory installation of tap aerators has led to savings of nearly 100 million litres (10 crore litres) of water daily, transforming the city’s approach to water conservation.

According to BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, over 15 lakh aerators have been installed across schools, apartment complexes, hotels, and commercial buildings. The initiative, which began last year, targets bulk consumers who face a ₹5,000 penalty and reduced water supply if they fail to comply. “On the enforcement front, BWSSB booked 594 cases and collected ₹29.7 lakh in fines during 2024–25,” he said.
Aerators which are small devices fitted to taps, regulate water flow, reducing it from 10-15 litres per minute to just 3-4 litres, cutting wastage by up to 80%. Since handwash taps make up around 30% of domestic water usage, the results have been significant.
