Bengaluru school equips two long-route buses with bio-toilets, costing ₹5 lakh each, ensuring student comfort and hygiene during 2+ hour traffic commutes
Bengaluru’s traffic gridlock has long been a source of frustration for commuters, and schoolchildren are no exception. To address the discomfort of students spending hours on buses, an international school on Sarjapur Road has introduced a novel solution: bio-toilets installed on two of its longest-route buses.
These buses serve students travelling to Rajajinagar and Yeshwantpur, journeys that often stretch beyond two hours. For children, especially younger ones, the lack of access to basic facilities during such extended commutes has been a persistent concern. The new installations are designed to provide a hygienic and stress-free option, ensuring that students can travel with greater comfort and dignity.
The project required significant investment, with each bus fitted at a cost of around ₹5 lakh. The school has indicated that if the initiative proves effective, more buses could be upgraded with similar facilities in the future.

Bio-toilets operate without conventional plumbing, relying on a biological process to break down waste. This system keeps the unit clean, odour-free, and safe for repeated use. The technology has already been tested successfully in Indian railway coaches, making it a practical choice for buses navigating Bengaluru’s congested roads.
Parents have welcomed the move, describing it as a thoughtful step toward solving a long-standing issue. For families, the addition of bio-toilets represents not only convenience but also a measure to safeguard the health and well-being of children during their daily commute.
As Bengaluru continues to grapple with traffic challenges, this initiative stands out as an example of how creative solutions can bring meaningful relief to students and potentially inspire similar measures across other institutions in the city.
