City braces for its coldest December since 2016; North and Kalyana Karnataka districts to see intense cold as IMD issues temperature alerts.

Bengaluru is preparing for an unusually cold spell next week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting minimum temperatures falling as low as 12°C. This would be the coldest December morning the city has experienced since 2016, when the temperature had last touched 12°C on December 11.

Over the past week, Bengaluru saw early morning temperatures around 15°C. However, IMD’s updated outlook indicates a further drop, placing the city well below the December average of 16.4°C. Clear skies, dry air and northerly winds are expected to intensify the chill. Officials have advised residents not to ignore the sudden cooling, warning that even a slight drop could make mornings sharply colder.

The chill is not limited to the capital. North and Kalyana Karnataka districts are expected to see even harsher conditions. Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Yadgir, Raichur, Bagalkote, Belagavi and Dharwad are likely to experience significantly lower-than-normal temperatures. In some pockets, IMD expects the minimum to fall into the single digits, similar to last week when Bidar touched 9°C and some areas dipped to 5–7°C.

Elsewhere in the state, conditions are expected to remain dry. Coastal Karnataka and parts of South Interior Karnataka will continue to experience clear skies and cool nights, though without drastic fluctuations. IMD notes that this overall trend of falling temperatures could continue through the week before rising gradually later.

For Bengaluru, foggy or misty mornings are likely, while daytime temperatures will stay mild, ranging between 27°C and 28°C. The coming week could mark one of the most notable cold phases the city has seen in recent years.
