B-SMILE targets Sankranti start and August 15 completion for 3.4-km corridor upgrade

Work on widening Dr Vishnuvardhan Road (Uttarahalli Main Road) is set to resume after years of delays caused by property objections, tree clearance issues and utility-related hurdles. The 3.4-km stretch, located within the Bengaluru West City Corporation limits under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, is being developed into a signal-free corridor to improve connectivity between Mysuru Road, Kanakapura Road, Kengeri and Mylasandra.

The project, estimated at ₹51 crore, requires the acquisition of 133 properties, including one belonging to an elected representative. Of these, 15 owners have opted for Transferable Development Rights (TDR) and four have already received their certificates. The remaining owners have indicated willingness to comply once the official acquisition notification is issued, clearing a major roadblock that had stalled the work.

Engineers working on the project said that plans are in place to restart construction by Sankranti and complete the entire stretch in six months. The initial phase of excavation and utility work from JSS Academy of Technical Education to Adithya Bakery was already completed earlier, but the remaining 2.4-km segment was halted due to objections related to tree removal and property boundaries.

With the B-SMILE team having now obtained forest department clearance, the work order for tree removal is expected shortly. Alongside this, the agency has already paid ₹14 lakh to BESCOM to shift electric poles, ensuring the road widening can proceed without utility conflicts.

Under the Chief Minister’s Navanagorathana scheme, the project forms part of the 2015 Revised Master Plan and includes building a 24-metre wide corridor. The design features 1-metre centre median, 1.5-metre footpaths on both sides, and 8.5-metre carriageways. The stretch will be fully blacktopped with uncompromised thickness to ensure durability.

Traffic on the route will continue in both directions during construction, with only slow-moving patches expected near the Mysuru Road junction. Once completed, the corridor will allow seamless, signal-free movement between Mysuru Road and Kanakapura Road, significantly reducing congestion for daily commuters.

The agency aims to inaugurate the upgraded stretch by August 15.
