Frustrated by poor road discipline, an Indian tech professional builds an AI-powered helmet that detects traffic violations in real time and reports offenders directly to the police.

An Indian tech professional has drawn widespread attention online after transforming his helmet into an AI-powered traffic monitoring device, aimed at tackling poor road discipline in Bengaluru. The innovation, created out of frustration with frequent traffic violations, is being hailed online as a classic “peak Bengaluru” solution.

The techie, Pankaj Tanwar, shared details of his invention on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he modified his helmet to function like a traffic police device. He explained that the system uses artificial intelligence to monitor roads in real time while he rides, identifying traffic rule violations by other motorists.

According to Tanwar, the helmet runs an AI agent that detects violations such as riding without a helmet or improper vehicle registration. The system captures visual proof along with location data, and the information is automatically forwarded to the police, enabling swift action.

Sharing his motivation, Tanwar wrote that constant exposure to reckless behaviour on Bengaluru roads pushed him to build the system himself. He also posted an example demonstrating the helmet’s effectiveness, where a scooter rider without a helmet was instantly flagged and reported.

The post quickly went viral, crossing 1.5 lakh views, with social media users praising the idea for its practicality and civic value. Many users suggested expanding the technology for wider public use, while others proposed adapting similar AI-based systems for car dashcams.

The innovation has sparked conversations around citizen-led technology solutions and how artificial intelligence can assist traffic enforcement in congested cities like Bengaluru.
