Industries Minister M.B. Patil unveils multi-phase green and innovation hub plan in Baiyappanahalli with botanical gardens, convention centres and startup incubation
Bengaluru’s eastern corridor is set to get its first large-scale Tree Park, with the Karnataka government deciding to develop a 105-acre green space at the former NGEF factory premises in Baiyappanahalli. Industries Minister M.B. Patil announced the decision after conducting a site inspection at the NGEF land.
Out of the total 105 acres, nearly 65 acres will be developed as a botanical garden-style arboretum, where a wide variety of trees will be grown. The project will be implemented in four phases, with the first phase estimated to cost ₹11.5 crore. The execution will be carried out across Phase-1, 1A, 1B and Phase-2.

Minister Patil clarified that no trees will be cut for the project. The NGEF campus already has around 8,500 trees, all of which will be preserved. The site also has eucalyptus trees, which will be studied scientifically before taking any decisions regarding their management.

The minister said that existing administrative buildings and industrial sheds inside the NGEF premises are structurally safe. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will certify their strength. These structures will be renovated and reused instead of being demolished.
To address parking needs, 4.5 acres of land outside the NGEF compound will be utilised to build a multi-level parking facility capable of accommodating 5,000 to 7,000 vehicles. Additionally, two large convention centres with a combined seating capacity of at least 15,000 people will be developed by upgrading existing electric motor sheds. These centres will host conferences, seminars, cultural events and public functions.
The project will also focus on innovation and technology. The government’s Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) will establish a startup incubation centre named ‘Innovers’ within the campus. Separately, the IT-BT Department will set up a Technology Innovation Museum at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore.

According to the minister, the proposed arboretum will also include a world-class sculpture park, an NGEF museum and an amphitheatre. He made it clear that no shopping mall is planned anywhere within the premises.
Calling it a transformative project for East Bengaluru, Patil said the Tree Park would be developed into an international-level destination and would be better than Cubbon Park and Lalbagh in terms of green space experience. Only a small portion of land required for the entrance falls under Metro alignment and will be acquired. He reiterated that environmental protection remains a priority and assured that not a single tree would be felled.
