Bengaluru is set to witness a first-of-its-kind mobility upgrade with the construction of 18 dedicated overbridges for two-wheelers and bicycles along the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR). The initiative, led by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), carries an estimated cost of over ₹21 crore and is targeted for completion within a year.

Overpasses designed solely for non-car vehicles

This marks the first time that Bengaluru’s road infrastructure will include overpasses designed solely for non-car vehicles. Officials say the move is aimed at improving road safety, reducing accident risks, and ensuring smoother travel for bikers and cyclists who often face challenges navigating high-speed traffic corridors.

The STRR, a 288-kilometre ring road project encircling the city, is envisioned as a key arterial route to decongest Bengaluru’s core areas and strengthen regional connectivity. By integrating these specialized overbridges, the project seeks to balance efficiency with inclusivity in urban transport design.

Urban planners see this as a significant shift toward accommodating diverse mobility needs in a city struggling with rapid expansion and traffic bottlenecks. The new facilities are expected to not only enhance safety but also minimize disruptions to mainstream vehicular movement, ensuring more seamless traffic flow across the stretch.

Experts note that the project highlights a growing emphasis on multimodal planning and eco-friendly transport solutions, placing cycling and two-wheeler travel firmly on Bengaluru’s infrastructure agenda.
