  • Karnataka gets 6,862 e-buses under FAME-II and 13,800 under PM e-Drive
  • Bengaluru allotted 1,221 FAME-II e-buses and 4,500 PM e-Drive first-phase buses
  • ₹517.23 crore sanctioned under FAME-II for state’s electric mobility upgrade

Karnataka gets a massive push for clean mobility with thousands of e-buses approved under FAME-II and PM e-Drive schemes, with Bengaluru securing one of the highest allocations.

Karnataka is set for one of its biggest upgrades in electric public transport after the Union Government confirmed the large-scale allotment of electric buses under two national mobility schemes. The information was shared in Parliament, where details of allocations under FAME-II and the PM e-Drive programme were placed on record.

Under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme, Karnataka has been allotted 6,862 electric buses, marking one of the highest allocations in the country. Alongside this, the state has also been sanctioned 13,800 electric buses under the PM e-Drive scheme, aimed at accelerating the shift toward clean energy mobility across India.

Bengaluru, which depends heavily on BMTC for daily commuting, stands to gain the most from this push. Under FAME-II alone, 1,221 new electric buses have been assigned to BMTC to strengthen its city operations. In addition, Bengaluru has secured 4,500 buses from the first phase of PM e-Drive’s allotment of 10,900 e-buses nationwide, placing the city among the largest beneficiaries.

The push comes at a time when the city is actively working to reduce emissions, manage rising fuel costs, and expand reliable public transport options. Officials have highlighted that the FAME-II programme has already sanctioned ₹517.23 crore to Karnataka, ensuring financial support for procurement and deployment.

With over 6,800 e-buses under FAME-II and nearly 14,000 more under PM e-Drive earmarked for the state, the combined allocations are expected to significantly transform Karnataka’s electric mobility landscape. For Bengaluru, the arrival of over 5,700 electric buses will play a crucial role in improving frequency, reducing pollution, and offering a cleaner, quieter and more efficient daily commute.
