Over 100 bus stops in Bengaluru identified as traffic bottlenecks due to poor planning; city to shift them up to 200 meters away to ease congestion and improve safety.
In a major urban mobility reform, the Bengaluru Traffic Police has listed 103 bus stops across the city as “unscientifically located,” citing severe traffic congestion, safety hazards, and accident risks. The decision comes after continuous complaints from commuters and motorists about frequent jams near busy intersections.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Karthik Reddy, has officially written to Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, recommending immediate relocation of these bus stops. The move aims to streamline city traffic and improve road safety, especially in densely populated and high-mobility zones.
Notable locations on the list include the Chinnaswamy Stadium Gate 12 bus stop, Jnana Bharathi bus stop, and several others near traffic signals and commercial junctions. Officials noted that buses halting close to signals lead to increased congestion and heightened accident risks as passengers board and alight amid moving vehicles.
Under the new plan, bus stops will be relocated between 50 and 200 meters away from their current positions. The traffic department and GBA are working together to ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers while maintaining accessibility.

Cost of Relocation and Construction
A regular bus stop costs around ₹1.5 to ₹3 lakh to construct, while a hi-tech shelter costs between ₹8 to ₹20 lakh. The relocation cost for each stop is estimated at ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.
This large-scale relocation marks a crucial step toward easing Bengaluru’s worsening traffic situation, ensuring safer commuting, and making public transport more efficient and commuter-friendly.
