Hebbal flyover traffic in Bengaluru eases with new loops, cutting commute from 20 mins to 2; smoother flow, though Ganganagar and Mekhri Circle remain congested

For years, the Hebbal flyover stood out as one of Bengaluru’s most frustrating traffic bottlenecks. Motorists navigating the Byataranapura–Kodigehalli–Esteem Mall stretch often endured queues stretching hundreds of metres, accompanied by honking and slow‑moving traffic. What should have been a short ride frequently turned into a 20 to 30‑minute ordeal.

That scenario has now changed dramatically. The opening of two new traffic loops has transformed the flow of vehicles across the flyover. Travel time, which earlier averaged nearly 20 minutes, has been reduced to just about two minutes in certain stretches. The loops have streamlined movement, allowing vehicles to pass through without the frequent halts that once defined the junction.

A recent assessment showed that a one‑kilometre ride along the service road from Esteem Mall to the Hebbal traffic police station took just over two minutes on a two‑wheeler, with speeds ranging between 40 and 60 kmph. The same journey, which previously tested commuters’ patience, now feels almost seamless. Extending further, a trip concluding near Chinnaswamy Stadium on MG Road at 11:05 am took roughly 30 minutes in total, marking a significant improvement compared with earlier commute durations.

The new loops cater to vehicles arriving from KR Pura and Kodigehalli, eliminating the stop‑and‑go system that previously slowed traffic at the junction. With all three lanes—the flyover lane and the two loops—now open, motorists experience uninterrupted movement, creating the impression of a signal‑free corridor.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Commuters continue to highlight congestion at Ganganagar and Mekhri Circle, areas that require further intervention to ensure consistently smooth travel across the city.

The Hebbal flyover upgrade demonstrates how targeted infrastructure improvements can deliver immediate relief to urban traffic woes. By reducing delays and enabling faster travel, the project has not only eased daily commutes but also set a precedent for future traffic management initiatives in Bengaluru.
