Toxic fumes during sump cleaning prove fatal near Immadihalli Temple Circle; police register case

A tragic accident claimed three lives in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area after toxic fumes inside a house water sump led to suffocation and collapse. The incident occurred under the limits of the Whitefield Police Station, near the Immadihalli Temple Circle, sending shockwaves across the neighbourhood.

According to preliminary information, the house owner, Munishamappa, first entered the sump to clean it. Soon after going inside, he reportedly collapsed and lost consciousness due to breathing difficulty. On noticing this, two others, Rudra Kumar and Vishwanath Achari, rushed to help him and descended into the sump one after another.

Tragically, both of them also inhaled the toxic gases present inside the confined space and collapsed. Neighbours and locals immediately alerted emergency services and arranged for medical help.

Munishamappa and Rudra Kumar were shifted to Manipal Hospital for urgent treatment, while Vishwanath Achari was taken to Vydehi Hospital. However, despite rapid medical intervention, all three were declared dead while being transported to the hospitals.

Initial investigations suggest that chemical residue inside the sump may have released poisonous fumes, leading to severe respiratory distress. The exact cause of the gas formation is yet to be confirmed and will be determined after a detailed forensic examination.
