A Bengaluru woman’s post has gone viral after she revealed how a Rapido driver allegedly used a fake version of the ride-hailing app to charge extra from passengers.

A Bengaluru-based woman, Meenal Goel, has alerted commuters to a new scam involving counterfeit versions of the Rapido ride-hailing app. In a detailed post on LinkedIn and Instagram, which has since gone viral, Goel explained how a driver allegedly used a fake app to overcharge her after a ride from Kempegowda International Airport.

Goel said she booked a Rapido cab showing a fare of ₹532. The ride proceeded normally until the end, when the driver demanded ₹650, claiming that his app displayed a higher fare. “We were shocked because our app still showed ₹532,” she wrote. When she asked to check his phone, she realised the driver’s app looked identical to Rapido’s official version, with the same logo, layout, and colours, but showed a different fare.

Suspecting foul play, she examined the phone closely and discovered that the driver was using a fake version of the Rapido app designed to trick passengers. “He panicked and admitted he’d been using this counterfeit app,” Goel revealed.

She added that the most worrying part was the absence of any record of the ride in her genuine Rapido account, leaving her unable to raise a complaint or request a refund. “Always verify the driver’s app before paying if the fare seems mismatched,” she urged.

Responding to the viral post, Rapido issued an official statement apologising for the incident and confirming that the driver’s account had been suspended. “We take such incidents very seriously. The concerned captain’s account has been permanently suspended, and we are investigating to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” the company said. Rapido also reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and urged users to report any suspicious activity immediately.
