Bengaluru’s Deepavali air turns hazardous: AQI surges above 100 in key areas

As the city celebrates the second day of Deepavali, pollution spikes in key areas and Minto Hospital reports 13 eye injury cases, raising health concerns for residents.

Bengaluru’s festive cheer is clouded by rising pollution as the city enters the second day of Deepavali. According to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas has surged beyond 100, signaling potentially dangerous conditions for residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with lung or heart conditions.

Majestic topped the charts with an AQI of 124, followed by Kasturinagar at 114, Mailasandra at 104, and Saneguruvanahalli at 101. Jindal industrial areas witnessed a staggering 56.4% increase in air pollution compared to pre-Deepavali levels. The sudden spike has raised concerns over respiratory health amid festive celebrations.

In contrast, some pockets of the city enjoyed cleaner air. AQI improved on Mysuru Road, Hombegowda Nagar, HSR Layout, and Peenya Industrial Area, offering brief respite to residents in these localities.

Amid the smoke and sparkles, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital reported 13 eye injury cases linked to fireworks. The victims include six children and seven adults, with four cases classified as grievous injuries causing partial vision impairment. Hospitals have urged citizens to exercise caution while handling firecrackers.
