Bengaluru invests ₹12k–15k crore in metro, rail, ring roads, tunnels & civic upgrades to cut commutes, ease traffic, and boost global tech hub status by 2030
Bengaluru, often called the Silicon Valley of India, continues to grapple with rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and aging infrastructure that challenge its 13 million residents. To address these issues, the city is witnessing a wave of ambitious infrastructure projects worth ₹12,000–15,000 crore, expected to reach break-even by late 2025. These initiatives—ranging from metro expansions to ring roads, tunnels, and civic upgrades—aim to cut commuting times, improve connectivity, and position Bengaluru as a global technology hub by 2030.
Metro Network Expansion
The Namma Metro is undergoing significant expansion, targeting 175 km of operational lines by December 2027. Phase 3, covering the orange and red lines over 45 km, is scheduled to begin construction in late 2025, with tenders closing in January 2026. Full operations are expected by 2029 or early 2030. The yellow line from RV Road to Bommasandra partially opened in August 2025, with completion slated for late 2025 or early 2026. Pink and blue lines are progressing with civil works, aiming for openings between 2026 and 2027. These additions will complement Phase 2, offering airport and suburban connectivity, and are expected to reduce travel times by 30–50 percent in dense corridors such as Silk Board.

Suburban Rail Projectsparks fan frenzy
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP), spanning 149 km, is currently 22 percent complete. Corridor one, linking Yelahanka to Devanahalli, is expected to finish by December 2026, while the Bengaluru City–Yelahanka stretch may extend to 2027–28. Corridors two through four are also scheduled for completion within the same timeframe. After years of stagnation, electrification and signalling tenders have been accelerated, with the system designed to complement metro services for longer commutes
Ring Roads and Expressways
The Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), a 280–288 km expressway costing ₹15,676 crore, is nearing completion. It will link 12 satellite towns—including Devanahalli, Hoskote, Sarjapur, and Ramanagara—while rerouting trucks and inter-city traffic away from the core. Phase 1, an 80 km stretch, was inaugurated in 2024, with further sections expected by 2026–27.
The long-delayed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), also known as the Bengaluru Business Corridor, will span 74 km, connecting Tumakuru and Hosur highways. Construction is expected to accelerate in 2026 following fresh tenders in October 2025.

Tunnels, Flyovers, and Road Upgrades
Plans for 170 km of tunnels and double-decker flyovers are underway, targeting completion between 2026 and 2027. Projects such as the Hebbal–Silk Board tunnel and JP Nagar–Hebbal flyovers are expected to halve peak-hour delays. Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has approved ₹2,141 crore for upgrading 100 roads, white-topping 500 km, and improving drains and flyovers.
Future Outlook
By 2027–2030, Bengaluru’s mobility landscape is projected to transform dramatically. Commutes in major corridors could drop below 30 minutes, pollution levels may decline with increased reliance on mass transit, and smoother logistics could boost GDP by 15–20 percent. With integrated metro, rail, and road systems, peri-urban centres are expected to thrive, driving real estate growth and employment opportunities. Together, these projects promise to make Bengaluru more sustainable, liveable, and globally competitive.
