Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Yellow Line gets safety clearance, eyes mid-august launch

BMRCL receives CMRS safety nod for Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra, inching closer to launch of driverless metro service in South Bengaluru

Bengaluru’s long-awaited Yellow Line under the Namma Metro network has taken a significant leap toward becoming operational. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has secured a key safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), Southern Circle, for the 19.15-kilometre stretch connecting RV Road to Bommasandra. This corridor is crucial for easing daily commutes in South Bengaluru, especially for thousands of professionals working in the Electronic City region.

According to BMRCL, the CMRS safety approval marks a major milestone but comes with a set of conditions. These include technical refinements and compliance measures that must be addressed before passenger services can officially commence. The BMRCL has confirmed that it is working to implement the prescribed changes and will submit a detailed compliance report to secure final operational clearance.

The comprehensive inspection of the Yellow Line was conducted over three days starting July 22. The review assessed critical systems such as power supply, tracks, signalling systems, station facilities, fire safety protocols, and passenger amenities. It also evaluated the performance of automated systems since the Yellow Line is set to be operated using driverless trains, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency.

While the official launch date has not been announced, BMRCL is targeting a potential inauguration around August 15. The opening ceremony may witness the presence of high-level dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though this remains unconfirmed.

Initial operations will begin with three driverless trains, running at 20-minute intervals. BMRCL plans to gradually reduce the headway to five minutes during peak hours by March 2026, once the full-scale operations are stabilised.

With this clearance, the Yellow Line is poised to significantly enhance Bengaluru’s metro connectivity, particularly for commuters between RV Road, Silk Board, and Bommasandra. It also promises reduced traffic congestion in the city’s IT corridor, further reinforcing Bengaluru’s push toward modern, sustainable urban mobility.
