Kempegowda International Airport reaches a major milestone in inclusive travel with upgraded global accessibility accreditation.
Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has become the first airport in the country to be awarded Level 3 under Airports Council International’s Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation programme. The recognition highlights the airport’s rapid progress in building an inclusive travel ecosystem for passengers with disabilities.
The airport advanced from Level 1 in December 2024 to Level 3 in less than a year, marking a significant improvement in accessibility standards. The upgrade reflects comprehensive efforts under the “B-Included” initiative, which focuses on accessible infrastructure, digital inclusion and services that support passengers with diverse needs.

Over the past year, the airport has strengthened several systems. Accessibility features have been expanded across the website, including the UX4G Internet Accessibility Widget backed by the Government of India. Dedicated information pages for passengers with reduced mobility and persons with disabilities have been added, along with new assistive digital tools.
A “Social Story” has been introduced to help neurodivergent travellers understand airport processes in advance. Training for airport staff, concessionaires and partner teams has been intensified to improve preparedness and empathy. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard programme and sensory room familiarisation sessions were also rolled out to improve comfort for passengers who need additional assistance.

In addition, accessibility principles are now being integrated into all new infrastructure and service upgrades. The airport is among the few in the world employing persons with disabilities in customer-facing roles, supported by a dedicated Assistive Device Policy.
BLR Airport continues to be one of India’s largest air hubs, handling 41.88 million passengers in FY 2024–25. Terminal 2 remains the country’s only Skytrax 5-Star rated terminal, and the airport retains its lead in perishable cargo handling for the fourth consecutive year.
